Aziz Jaafar

Aziz Jaafar is Professor of Accounting at Bangor Business School. He has taught at Aberystwyth University, MARA University of Technology and Henan University of Technology. Professor Jaafar has audit and management consultancy experience whilst working with one of the Big4 accounting firms. His research work has appeared in many internationally recognised journals such as Journal of Corporate Finance, Abacus, International Journal of Accounting, British Accounting Review, Journal of Economic Behaviour and Organization, International Review of Financial Analysis, Journal of Financial Services Research and European Journal of Finance. Aziz is a member of CPA (Australia)
He is co-editor in chief of Journal of Financial Reporting and Accounting, associate editor of Journal of Islamic Accounting and Business Research and member of editorial board at Journal of Accounting in Emerging Economies.

Mr. Tirus Mwithiga
Mr. Tirus Mwithiga, is currently based in Nairobi Kenya and serves as the Group Retail Banking Director for NCBA Bank Plc which is the 4th largest Banking Group in the East Africa Region. Tirus has over 30 years' experience in Retail Banking business management covering areas like products, sales, service and channel management. Before joining NCBA Bank in May 2020, Tirus served in an array of leadership roles locally, regionally and internationally, with Barclays and Standard Chartered Banks. Tirus is a certified Banker with professional training from The London Institute of Banking and Finance and completed his Chartered Banker MBA from Bangor University in Dec 2020.

Dr Ayan Orujov is a Lecturer in Finance at Bangor Business School. Ayan has completed his PhD on the "Value of Political Connections in the UK" at the University of Bristol in 2015. His current research continues to involve the issues of political connections as well as executive compensation and corporate governance in general.

Kristy Ballah FCA, ICAEW, CBMBA, Head of Internal Audit, AfrAsia Bank, Mauritius
Kristy Kumar Ballah is a fellow member (FCA) of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) and is also a member of the Chartered Banker Institute. He holds an MBA with the Bangor Business School as well as a bachelor degree in Accounting & Finance from the University of Birmingham. He has many years of audit experience and was previously a Group Internal Audit Manager in MCB. Before joining MCB, Kristy worked in the assurance department of PwC for more than 7 years where he managed external audit and advisory assignments.Kristy brings with him valuable knowledge and experience in banking and several other sectors. He has a track record for managing assignments involving multi-disciplinary teams in several countries comprising amongst others Angola, Botswana, Burundi, Comoros, Kenya, Madagascar, Maldives, Mozambique and Seychelles.

He has worked with over eighty banking organisations in the UK and overseas, as well as numerous regulatory bodies and NGOs, including the Financial Services Authority and the British Know How Fund (a division of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office).

Misty Anne Dorman has recently attained the prestigious Chartered Banker MBA with Merit – with its dual designations and is the only banking MBA programme in the world. She's a career Human Resources professional for over fifteen (15) years, transitioned to the Compliance realm in 2018. She currently holds the position Senior Manager - Policies & Training at Scotiabank, a core member of the Anti-Money Laundering (AML) Compliance Program Office which supports the English Caribbean Region countries with the rollout, interpretation and anchoring of the Bank's Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorist Financing & Sanctions requirements under local and head office statutes, regulations and enterprise-wide standards.

Over the past 10 years banks and financial institutions have paid fines exceeding USD 26 billion for failures to prevent financial crimes. It seems like money laundering, fraud and market abuse are constantly on the front pages of the newspapers; with the regulators slow to catch up with increasingly creative fraudsters and organised criminal gangs.

  • An introduction to Financial Crime, a fascinating and multi-disciplinary topic
  • Looking at types of financial crimes such as money laundering, terrorist financing and insider trading
  • Consider the profiles of perpetrators, and how to develop a risk based approach to impeding financial crimes

Delia Cox,

Delia is an award winning finance expert with over eight years of diverse experience in Central Banking and Development Banking. Delia is currently based in Italy, where she utilizes her experience to support the financial risk management function at the International Fund for International Development, a United Nations Agency headquartered in Rome. Throughout her tenure at the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank, she work in the areas of sovereign debt management where advised and provided technical support to several governments on ways to strengthen debt management capacity to improve debt sustainability; and banking supervision where she applied a risk-based supervisory framework to support the safety and soundness of the banking system. Delia holds the Chartered Banker MBA, the only executive qualification in the World that can offer a Professional qualification of Chartered Banker status from the Chartered Banker Institute and an MBA from Bangor University.

Tanya McCartney, CEO & Executive Director of The Bahamas Financial Services Board
Tanya McCartney is a UK trained barrister and chartered banker. She received her CBMBA from Bangor University in 2014. She is a certified anti-money laundering specialist and compliance professional. Tanya started out in the legal profession in 1997 as Assistant Counsel in the Office of the Attorney General working in civil litigation and criminal prosecution and then moved into the financial services industry in 1999 as legal counsel and compliance officer for a local private bank. Tanya has served in various senior positions with a number of international banking institutions in The Bahamas.
