CBMBA Conference 2022
Bangor Business School’s Executive Education were delighted to host the inaugural CBMBA Conference held at Bangor University on the 7-8 September, titled, “Supporting the Delivery of Financial Services in Challenging Times – A New Normal?”
We were joined by representatives from global banking and financial services institutes, among an audience of CBMBA students & alumni and financial services professionals from across the Caribbean, Africa, the Middle East, Australia and UK.
Day 1 Presentations
Day 1 of the CBMBA Conference consisted of an opening roundtable discussion – setting the scene, insights from geographies and industry sectors and an academic paper. Matiullah Obaidi, Deputy CEO of Ghazanfar Bank Kabul, Afghanistan
Mr. Matiullah Obaidi has vast banking expertise in several leadership roles of the bank. Previously he served as Chief Compliance Officer of Ghazanfar Bank and was approved by the central bank of Afghanistan for the said post, alongside he is Vice Chairman of GRCC (Governance, Risk & Compliance Committee) of Afghanistan Banks Association. Mr. Obaidi is a Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist from ACAMS-USA and Certified Financial Crime Specialist from ACFCS-USA. Furthermore, an active member of the Chartered Banker Institute. |

Wendy Delmar, CEO, Caribbean Association of Banks Inc.
Wendy brings over 20 years of experience in mainstream banking to the leadership of the Caribbean Association of Banks Inc., having previously worked with Scotiabank. During her journey with the Bank, Wendy held progressively senior roles, having started her career in Retail Banking as a Teller, moving into Customer Service and then lending. Wendy later joined the MDO in Barbados as Retail and Small Business Coach, a position she retained for 2 years before returning to Saint Lucia as the Branch Manager for the Castries operation. She later took on the role of President of the Bankers Association of Saint Lucia. Both posts she held until she joined the CAB in November 2018. |
Dr Tanya McCartney, CEO & Executive Director, Bahamas Financial Services Board
Dr Tanya is a UK-trained barrister and a Chartered Banker. Her professional career began in 1997 as Assistant Counsel in The Office of the Attorney General. Miss McCartney is an experienced leader in financial services with expertise in Banking, Fiduciary Services, Compliance, & Risk Management. Gala Dinner Guest Speaker: John Devine, Chair of Credit Suisse Trust Limited
John has extensive experience of the Global financial markets and executive and board level decision making through the various financial cycles and crisis over the past 35 years. He held executive management and board postings in London, Frankfurt, Tokyo, Hong Kong and New York during his 25 year executive career at Merrill Lynch and Co and Threadneedle Investment Management. John has a degree in Geography, has a CBMBA from Bangor University and is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and a member of the Chartered Banker Institute.

Day 2 Presentations

Joseph Healy, CEO, Judo Bank
Joseph is the CEO of Judo Bank. An experienced international banker, he has held executive positions at NAB, ANZ, CIBC World Markets, Citibank and Lloyds Bank. Joseph was an Adjunct Professor at University of Queensland Business School and graduated with his Chartered Banker MBA in 2013. He has authored three books and is a Fellow of FINSIA as well as a Fellow of the Chartered Bankers Institute in Scotland. |
Dr Bayo Olugbemi, FCIB Immediate Past President, Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria
Dr Bayo has extensive experience spanning 40 years in the areas of Investment Banking, Portfolio Management, Share Data Management, Pension Fund Administration/Management, Securities Clearing And Depository, Stockbroking, Mutual Fund Administration and Treasury Management. He is a turnaround specialist who took over the Registrars Department of First Bank of Nigeria Plc (now FBN Holdings Plc) and transformed it from loss making to a Multi Billion Naira venture. Bayo has served and is still serving on several committees of Central Bank Of Nigeria, Securities and Exchange Commission and The Nigerian Stock Exchange. |
Deno Cartwright, President, Bahamas Institute of Financial Services
Deno is a Compliance Manager by profession having graduated from the College of The Bahamas in 2011, he holds a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree in the discipline of Finance and has graduated with the Chartered Banker MBA from Bangor University in 2017. Mr. Cartwright is also the current President of The Bahamas Institute of Financial Services. |
Molaodi Menyatso, Director of Academics, Botswana Institute of Banking & Finance
Mr Menyatso holds a Master of Education (MEd) degree from the University of Botswana and Management Development Programme qualification from the University of Stellenbosch (South Africa). He has extensive knowledge in policy development and analysis, curriculum development, pedagogy, assessment and management of effective learning environments. He has over 30 years working in the public education and training sector and was overseeing the curriculum development of the general education sub-sector before venturing into the private sector. At BIBF, Mr Menyatso’s experience and knowledge was vital to transforming the institute into a more industry focused and vibrant entity that it is today. |
Darlene Jones, Executive Director, Jamaica Institute of Financial Services
Darlene is currently the Executive Director of the Jamaica Institute of Financial Services (JIFS) with its mandate to ensure the professional development of the financial services sector. Having served this organisation for over twenty years, she has successfully transitioned it through various stages of growth and has developed significant strategic business partnerships, including the Chartered Banker MBA Programme with Bangor University. |
Delia Cox, Adviser, Debt Management, The Commonwealth
Delia provides technical assistance, policy advice, and capacity building to help member states strengthen their debt management operations to achieve debt sustainability. She was previously a central banker and international finance professional and has a wealth of knowledge in the fields of sovereign debt management, risk management, and banking supervision, amassed during her tenure at the United Nation’s International Fund for International Development (IFAD) in Italy and at the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank in Saint Kitts and Nevis. |
Fareda Sands, President, Initium Novum Enterprises Ltd
Fareda Sands is a seasoned Compliance, Risk and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) Specialist. With over two decades in the industry, she now serves as the Founder and President of Initium Novum Enterprise Ltd. While the firm started as a Compliance Consultancy specializing in AML training, it has now blossomed into an Investment Promotion and Business Consultancy practice. She has attained various certifications in the AML, Compliance, Risk and Financial Crimes space and brings this wealth of knowledge to her firm. She recently attained a specialized Chartered Banker Master’s in Business Administration (CBMBA) from Bangor University in Wales, United Kingdom. Steve Pateman, President, Chartered Banker Institute
Steve has worked in banking for over 40 years and is currently a Non-Executive Director at Bank of Ireland where he chairs the Remuneration Committee. He sits on the Advisory Board of The Arora Group and Kingsley Healthcare and was previously on the Financial Capability Board of the Money Advice Service. |
Marita I. Odimgbe, Budget Analyst, Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation
Odimgbe Marita works with the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), where she currently serves as a Budget Analyst in the Finance Department. She has also had a rich and vast experience serving in the Research, Policy and International Relations Department as well as the Asset Management Department. Prior to joining the Corporation, she worked at Intercontinental Bank Plc. (now Access Bank Plc.) in various capacities. Marita is a member, Chartered Banker Institute of Scotland (CBI), the Nigeria Institute of Management (NIM), and an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN), and the Risk Management Association of Nigeria (RIMAN). |
Robert Souster, Professional Ethics & Regulations Module Director
Bob has twenty years experience in the banking industry, initially with a professional institute and then as a divisional manager with a mutual mortgage bank in Dublin. He has worked with over eighty banking organisations in the UK and overseas, as well as numerous regulatory bodies and NGOs, including the Financial Services Authority and the British Know How Fund (a division of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office). Bob is a chief examiner for a major professional accountancy body and for the Chartered Institute of Bankers in Scotland. He lectures extensively on professional courses on ethics, corporate governance and law throughout Europe and Asia. He lectures on programmes for Shanghai Jiao Tong University and SUFE, China. |
Keith Checkley, CBMBA Global Roving Ambassador
Over the past years Keith has worked as an independent Strategic Consultant, advising on several consulting situations and designing and implementing training programs for educational institutes/business schools; banks; financial institutions and large corporates. He has had extensive experience in the UK and overseas locations. He is author of 17 books including Credit Masterclass which is a recommended textbook for CBMBA. He is a Global Roving Ambassador for the CBMBA and a Fellow of the Chartered Banker Institute. |
